March was a very busy month for us. Year 9 camp on Lamma Island, Singapore to visit friends, and Taipei for football. Immediately after Claire and Tara left, we spent 4 days and 3 nights on Lamma Island with all 100 of the year 9 students for camp. It was a wonderful week filled with hiking, outdoor activities, and camping. The students were so well behaved and really enjoyed all of the outdoor activities, especially because many of them are definitely city kids! Our season passes at Universal Studios in Singapore were expiring in April, so we knew we had to get there one more time before then. So, with our only free weekend in 2 months, we hopped on a plane and went there for the weekend. We stayed in Aani and David in their downtown apartment, which had an amazing view of the city. We spent Saturday drinking lots of craft beer and going on rides at Universal Studios. Unfortunately I didn’t take many pictures, but it was still a wonderful day. On Sunday we met Joe and Pam for lunch to have a quick catch up before heading back to HK. The following weekend we were in Taipei for Brandon’s football game. We’d been to Taipei before, but it’s definitely different going with people who speak the language and know where to go. Our flight was massively delayed on Friday, so we didn’t end up getting to the hotel until 4:30am and had to leave by 10am for the football game. So needless to say, we were tired on Saturday. The football field was in really rough shape. And it was raining. So it made for an incredibly muddy game. But the Warhawks won, and the boys definitely enjoyed playing in the mud! (last photo taken from Taipei online newspaper) After the game on Saturday, we all went out for dinner. It was great going to a local place with people who knew what to order. Even though I’m not a huge fan of Taiwanese food, I managed to try everything and even enjoyed some of it. After dinner, a few of us went to the night markets and wandered. Again, awesome to be with people who know how to speak Mandarin, as well and know where to go. I know Brandon and I wouldn’t have lasted more than like 10 minutes in the market alone. We would have been confused and have had no idea what to order (Taiwanese night markets are pretty much all food). I wasn’t as daring with the food there, and definitely didn’t try everything (or much of anything actually), but it was still a good experience.
