Today's picture was almost a lot more exciting. When Brandon woke up this morning, he said, "Let's go to Singapore for the weekend." We were super close to booking it, but we waited too long and the afternoon flight was already full. So instead, I just went and did some shopping in Kowloon. The picture is from Canton Road, which is a really fancy shopping area. I clearly didn't go into the stores in the picture. In addition to all your high-end retail, there's also H&M which is where I went. It was so crazy busy. But I got a few things for really cheap, so that was nice.

Tonight was the senior farewell dinner. It was an awesome night. Lots of speeches. Lots of laughs. Lots of reminiscing. Lots of pictures. Since this is DC's first graduating class, this was a big deal. Some of the teachers have been here since the school opened, so it was clearly a very emotional night for them. We've only been with these kids for a year, but we're still going to miss them like crazy. This is a picture with 5 of my 7 students who were in my 12th grade IB higher level math class. I had such a great year with them and I'm so excited to see what the future has in store for them.
Tonight was Discovery College's first ever graduation.Wwhen the school opened in 2008, it only went through 7th grade and every year they added a grade, therefore this year was the first year to have seniors. The ceremony was pretty nice and it was fun to chat with all of the seniors after. I'm going to miss those kids a lot. They were such a great group to have in class. I'm really excited to see where life takes them. Today we went to the beach in DB with some of our friends for one of their birthdays. It was so hot out! We lasted a couple hours and then moved it inside. It wouldn't have been bad if we were swimming too, but the water here in DB is gross. It was a great day of fun and friends :) Today I spent a majority of the day wandering around Kowloon. I started in Mongkok and worked my way down to Tsim Sha Tsui. I did a bit of shopping, but it was insanely busy. I was at H&M in TST and it's a very average sized store. One that if you were in the states, it would maybe have 50 people in at a time. I'm pretty sure there were 500+ there yesterday. I'm not exaggerating. There were four sets of fitting rooms and then lines were about 30 people at each. It was insane. The rest of Kowloon was super busy too. Probably the busiest I've seen it since moving here. But it was nice just to be out and about, enjoying the city. After that, I met Brandon in Tung Chung to see the new X-Men movie. It was okay (and for me saying that it's okay, that means it's probably really good for the normal person. I just don't really like movies). Five more weeks til summer :)
Wow this week has been a bad week for posting. Whoops! Mon-Wed were pretty uneventful. Thursday and Friday we had professional development at another ESF school in HK. Usually those are the type of things I don't really like. Sitting and listening to someone on what I should be doing in the classroom. And it sometimes gets stressful because I think I'm not doing everything right. But this guy, Colin Foster, was amazing! He had so many cool ideas if how to teach math through inquiry and super fun activities, rather than just worksheets. And the best part is, he actually had us do the activities so that we could pretend to be students and try them out and work through things. It was really good. Probably some of the best math PD I've been to. After that, a bunch of us went to The Globe in Central. It started out being about 10 teachers and then after a few hours, it was just a few of us. After The Globe, we went wandering to find a craft beer shop that Joe said was nearby. We weren't convinced, because we went up this small building that was a little creepy (but not really since it's HK) and it totally seemed like we were lost, but then we found it! They were just this little shop with tons of beer. This picture is from one of the signs in there that I thought was neat. After that, we made our way back to DB and had a few more drinks in the plaza. Overall, a very good night. Today we spent the day at Mui Wo with a bunch of other teachers. It was one of their birthdays, so we had a BBQ on the beach. The weather was actually pretty nice. We ate and drank a lot and a few of us went swimming at the end of the day. Overall it was a great day and just what I needed after a stressful few weeks :) Nothing too exciting today. Just worked on more personal project supervisor stuff. But I'm almost done :) Tonight, Brandon and I went to North Plaza (area of shops near our apartment) and just had a drink and enjoyed the outside. It's crazy humid here now. Like 85 and 90% humidity. But hey, I hear MN is still kind of in winter, so I'll take this any day! Wow it's been a while. Oops. It's been a crazy week. My seniors took their last math IB test today (they had five... Five hours worth of math exams. Higher level math is intense!), so that was exciting. Personal project stuff is well under way, too. I'm in the process of allocating all of the students to supervisors. It's a process, but once it's all done, it'll be nice. I don't think things will ever slow down with this, but at least each student will have a 'go-to' person, instead of them all going to me :) This picture is just because it was a pretty full moon tonight and I absolutely love the view from our apartment at night. I received this card from two of my students today. When I wasn't looking, they put the card on my desk, and when I found it, they had already left. So sneaky! And so sweet. It literally made my day :) This is why I do what I do. (And by 'this' I don't mean getting cards. Haha.) |
